Certain moments in nature go unnoticed. Light, color, and form arrive in alignment, reveal a pattern or relationship, and dissolve. These photographs are an attempt to hold that moment still.
Nothing is constructed or altered into being. The scenes already exist. The work is in recognizing them and isolating what matters within the frame.
Made across the landscapes of New England and the Pacific Northwest — in a range of formats including DSLR, 35mm and medium format film, and iPhone — these images move between color and black and white, from intimate details to broader landscapes. A graduate of programs at the Fine Arts Work Center in Provincetown and Maine Media Workshops in Rockport, Maine, Michael David Watkins has been a lifelong photographer.
Four Seasons, his current exhibition, is on view at the Parker River National Wildlife Refuge Visitor Center in Newburyport, Massachusetts. Fine art prints are available exclusively through this website — each printed by hand on Epson Velvet Fine Art paper using archival inks, in small and medium sizes. Large and custom sizes are available on inquiry.
